Project Description
Freeway Construction and Urban Renewal in Stockton
Following World War II, Stockton’s landscape underwent a major shift due to suburbanization and the expansion of the freeway system to both serve and facilitate a rise in travel demand for the growing numbers of suburbanites within the region. One of the freeways in question was a crosstown east/west freeway that would link Interstate 5 which ran along the city’s western edge to State Route 99 which ran along the eastern edge. This storymap looks into how the route chosen for this freeway cut through Stockton’s vibrant Asian neighborhoods of Chinatown, Japantown and Little Manila.
