Zen in the Art of Travel Behavior:
Using Visual Ethnography to Understand the Transit Experience
Line: Metro Red Line
North Hollywood Subway Station
Orange Line riders must cross Lankershim to reach the subway portal. This portal stands out tremendously compared to others along the line.
Station Sign
This sign seems catered towards drivers searching for the station.
Food Vendors
Every time I come here, there are always people selling food from carts/stands.
Waiting for the Train
Although the overhead screens indicate arrival times, it's always tempting to peer down the tunnel and check for the train.
Waiting to Board
Metro should post signs at terminus stations warning people not to board in-bound trains. This would allow police to sweep the cars faster.
Subway System Map
This helps riders know how close they are to their stop.
Subway Car
If our class was not here, the car would be much emptier.
In Event of Emergency...
Frequent riders (especially those who stand by the door) probably have this procedure memorized.
Doors Closing
I wonder how frustrating it must feel to arrive on the platform as soon as the doors close.
Escalator Back Down to Platform
That man should keep a closer eye on his bag.
Civic Center Station Portal - Hill/Temple
I'd much rather take the escalator than walk up the long flight of stairs.
